It’s Gluten Free Week!!

gluten free Sep 09, 2021

This is a subject near and dear to my heart. After years of strange and seemingly unrelated symptoms including gut pain, skin rashes and bowel problems, I finally nailed down the cause. Gluten.

Gluten is the protein found in wheat, rye and barley. It shows up in common products like pizza, bread, pasta and wheat-based cereals. It has no nutritious value and, in fact, is indigestible by the human gastrointestinal system.

In most people, gluten passes through the digestive process without any fanfare, but in a growing number us, it triggers an inflammatory process that can present with an allergic reaction such as coeliac disease (CD) or as a milder gluten sensitivity.

Although the inflammatory process for CD and gluten sensitivity targets the villi in the small intestine, these reactions can affect any part of the body and include:

  • Bowel problems such as diarrhoea, constipation, smelly faeces
  • Gut pain 83% of gluten sensitive people have gut pain
  • Unexplained fatigue caused by iron deficiency is a common symptom
  • Chronic pain in joints and muscles
  • Skin reactions including psoriasis, itching, hair loss
  • Depression, anxiety
  • Fatigue

If you are suffering with these symptoms often and for no apparent reason, it is worth having a test to determine if you are coeliac and, even if the test is negative, trying a gluten free diet. These symptoms can mean other serious health issues so it is worth seeing your doctor or health professional to rule those out. If you go gluten free it is important to find other grains that provide the nutrition and fibre that wheat , barley and rye used to provide. There are heaps of these: quinoa, sorghum, freekeh, millet, buckwheat, rice and lots more.

Gluten sensitivity and celiac disease are pretty common these days and although they are both very different in how the inflammatory reaction occurs, they both cause debilitating effects in people who are affected by these issues.  Luckily these days with the increase in the number of people with these issues around the world, there are products and recipes everywhere.

The secret to a happy transition is to find replacements and stick to them. I LOVE OMG bread, Little Bird Macaroons and the Rebel Gluten Free Wraps. Pizza bases and pasta are easy to find too so really you never have to be without.

Here is a recipe for a gorgeous brownie with only good things inside and completely gluten free!! Enjoy!!
